NYJC Open House 2011
2011 January 16
by Valerie Mok

On the 11th of January 2011, all NYJC students were mobilized from 8.30am. They were bustling about in College to get ready for the first important event of the year – the College’s Open House.

For that one day, everyone had the same goal in mind which was to attract as many visitors as possible to join the College. It was very much heartwarming to see everyone sharing resources and putting their heart and soul into getting ready for anyone who would be walking through the gates, to see what NYJC was like for themselves.

Aside from the Student Councilors and students from the Scholars Development Programme who acted as officially-designated College tour guides, the rest of the student body had the job of promoting our CCA at our assigned booths. However, many took the initiative of raising our respective CCA’s profile by constantly walking around the school to hand out tokens and leaflets advertising ourselves to the incoming batch of students, while welcoming visitors to the school and helping with registration directions all at the same time. Members of the Dragonboat team lined the sheltered pathway shouting out greetings while Journalism Society members sweetened the experience by handing out candy to our visitors. Members of the Chinese Drama Club even helped to open taxi and car doors every now and then, a gesture that would surely have astonished as it would have delighted our visitors. Members from other CCA groups brandished flyers and stickers were scattered everywhere from the fountain to the atrium, which ensured that the gaiety and good cheer from the gates did not falter until the parade of booths beckoned. All around the campus, students helped to double up as the school’s unofficial ambassadors to answer questions and entertain queries from members of the public about life in NYJC with candour and pride.

All these in my view bonded us in some sort of way – it felt like we belonged to the same ‘family’, bearing the same responsibility of making sure everyone had a good time in NYJC that day. I could feel pride swelling from somewhere inside as some visitors confirmed these feelings with the feedback of their experience. Those who decided that day to put NYJC as their first choice would certainly have shared the same feelings as us – they would have felt that they belonged here right from the moment they stepped in. They would have seen a school with people who were as warm, friendly and approachable as the campus was as beautiful an environment to learn and play in.

From the start of the open house to the end, the energy and buzz of the school stayed constant but in the view of some, it would probably have increased as the day wore on. One-minute challenges at the various CCA stalls added to the carnival-like atmosphere and the performances that took place at the atrium never failed to provide entertainment as well as insights into the various CCA groups that took to the stage to perform. In particular, I loved the fact that the stage was just a simple platform in a common area – it removed any theatrical barriers and helped make it seem more like a celebration which everyone was invited to partake instead of a mere showpiece to be admired from afar.

I believe this Open House was definitely a success. We were all warmly welcoming our future family members in a great celebration, and not just playing hosts to a group of strangers. Everyone had done a great job, from the teachers who continuously gave sound advice and good counsel, to the student councilors who were managing the Open House, as well as the tour guides and members of the AVA Society, who ensured the smooth running of the sound systems. I hope everyone else had as great a time as I did, and I gladly welcome all potential NYJC students to a great future in this warm and happy campus.

Nanyang Junior College INFORMATION

Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) is a junior college which is part of the education system in Singapore, offering a two-year course for pre-university students leading up to the GCE 'A' Level examinations.

Previously known as Lorong Chuan Junior College, NYJC was founded in 1977, and was among the first junior colleges to be established in Singapore. A year later, in 1978, it was renamed to Nanyang Junior College.

The name "Nanyang" is hanyu pinyin for the Chinese characters representing "South Sea", which was what the mainland Chinese people referred to the region encompassed by Singapore, Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. The name is a reflection of the origins of Singapore having been built by immigrants from predominantly China, India, Malaysia, as wells as, other parts of the world. The badge of the Junior College has a picture of a Merlion on a red background above a sea, and its motto is "Together We Build".
